Saginaw Surplus was not started as a vision but as a necessity. For many years Patrick Porter (founder of Saginaw Surplus) was a successful sales rep for manufacturers selling to home and apartment builders. But in 2009 the US housing market began to crash and so did his sales. Besides needing to support his family, Patrick employed his son and other young ones in the area that he also viewed as his boys. Patrick realized he needed a new business model to keep him and his boys working. He noticed many manufacturers had a large “surplus” of inventory they could no longer sell to home builders. At the same time, while new homes were not being built, many were buying foreclosures and remodeling. On a whim, Patrick bought a trailer of overstock doors and tried selling them individually on Craigslist. He would lean a door against the wall, take a picture, and post it online to sell. It was a tough time for all in the industry, but using this process he was able help remodelers save some money, which helped them improve their community, and in the end make payroll for his employees. Eventually he built his own website from his office in Saginaw and started selling from there. It was then, in 2010, that Saginaw Surplus was born. Patrick and his employees made a name for themselves putting customers first and saving them money at the same time. It was hard work, but they were able to weather the recession and help the surrounding community in the process. Over a decade later, we are still working to maintain that same reputation. And you can even still find a couple of Patrick’s boys still with us. In 2016 Corey took the reins, and in 2020 we moved to a larger warehouse in Haltom City, but we are still Saginaw Surplus at heart! And our focus remains the same as when we were founded. Taking care of the customer and improving our community with a quality product at a fair price. |
